About Me
Hi! I go by V, but you can also call me Ven or Vee if you prefer![1]
I'm a very big nerd and care a lot about freedom and privacy. Below you can find more about my interests!
Interests
Programming
It should probably go without saying that my biggest interest is Programming! I have only been doing it since 2020 but would consider myself very proficient and good at it. I enjoy it so much that when I'm really passionate about a project or feature I'm working on, I can go for 10 hours straight, completely forgetting the time or my hungry stomach ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've tried out a lot of things and learned many languages and frameworks because learning new things is just so fun and rewarding :D ! But I mainly specialise on Android and full-stack Web development and my favourite languages are Typescript and Go. I also really enjoy more niche languages like Crystal, but unfortunately I don't really get to use them because they are too niche and not really production ready... :(
In the past, I struggled a lot with staying motivated for my projects, mainly because at that time I was still learning and only making stuff that no one used. But nowadays several of my projects have a lot of people (millions) using it, which is incredibly rewarding and motivating. Even more so because everything I build is open source which led to an amazing community of contributors forming. My main project Vencord has 296 different contributors! It has honestly reached a point where I can't even keep up with the amount of received pull requests anymore, but I am still very grateful for everyone's contributions D:
Modding
A more specific aspect of Programming I'm very into is Modding. I love reverse engineering proprietary programs and adding additional functionality to them (or removing undesired functionality like ads or tracking). My first modding endeavours were CSS Themes and JS Plugins for BetterDiscord and Powercord. There, I met many awesome and smart like-minded people, which really helped me get better at it. Eventually I joined the Aliucord project (a mod for the Kotlin Discord Android app that uses XPosed style Java method hooking) and was one of its main developers for a year. This skyrocketed my talent and allowed me to transition into my own big project a year later: Vencord, a modification for the Discord desktop app, which today is one of the most popular Discord mods. Vencord patches Discord's Webpack script loader to intercept newly added JS scripts and apply RegEx based code replacements to them, essentially rewriting Discord's JavaScript code to do what we want it to do.
Music
Music is one of the most important things in my life. I have a pretty diverse taste but my favourite Genres are: Black Metal, most other kinds of Metal, Punk Rock, Classical Music, East Asian (CJK) Pop, and Folk/Folk Rock and Ballads!
Gaming
For how much money I spent on my PC, I really don't game all that much. But it's still a hobby of mine that I'm pretty passionate about! Unfortunately I mainly enjoy singleplayer games so I don't get to play with people much D: - the only multiplayer games I play are Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, Overwatch, oh and very rarely Dead by Daylight. In terms of singleplayer games, I love story rich games - like the Resident Evil series (especially re2 remake and re4 remake), the Tomb raider series - and RPGs - like Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series.
You can also check out my Steam, but please don't try to add me unless we know each other well.
Username Lore
I initially based my username on the planets Venus, Neptune, and Mercury. As nickname, I used just Ven.
During a conversation on the Aliucord Discord server where I was criticising the Powercord Discord modification, zoot jokingly asked "Vencord when".
From then on, Vencord became a gag in multiple Discord modding communities. Fast forward one year to August 2022 and I actually turned it into a reality as a joke, never expecting it to become popular.
But oh did it become popular...
In hindsight, I very much regret naming it after myself. I only did so for the joke and because I never expected for it to become so popular. This led to me disassociating with the name Ven, which is why I just shortened it to V.
